Intarsia

Intarsia is an advanced lapidary technique in which many types and colors of stone are cut and assembled with precision to form geometric designs or pictures. It is also known as "pietre dure" or hard stone marquetry and was invented in Florence, Italy in the late 16th century as a natural outgrowth of an ancient tradition of stone and tile mosaics.
